Hello, everyone.

You may be wondering why the website isn't being updated. This is because we lost our one (!) online person and a new one has not yet been hired. I'll keep you posted, and I may well just wind up updating from here.

Just got back from the World Fantasy Convention in lovely Tempe, AZ.

Although I didn't win in the Professional Category, and Charles de Lint didn't win in Short Fiction, it was very productive and lots of fun. I hated to leave.

The 2004 World Fantasy Award Finalists have been announced.

Charles de Lint is a Finalist in the Short Fiction category, for his picture book A Circle of Cats (illustrated by Charles Vess, who won the Spectrum Gold for its cover)

And I myself am a Finalist in the Professional category, specifically for my work with Firebird. I am flabbergasted.

I recently went to ALA (also known as the American Library Association)'s Annual Conference, where I got to see many wonderful librarians. I also spoke on a panel at the Booklist Forum with Nancy Farmer, Tamora Pierce, and Jane Yolen. It was fun, especially when the lights cut out during Nancy's speech.

1. Tomorrow afternoon Andy and I leave for Minicon, where I am Editor Guest of Honor. I have never done this before. Wish me luck.

2. While at Minicon, I will be feting pameladean, because her Secret Country books have been doing very well. And we will be doing more books together, too!

3. The Firebird website is being updated shortly. Soon we will have newsletter emailing capability. Woo!

Today was the reception for the 75th annual list of the New York Public Library Books for the Teen Age. This list is actually a lovely large glossy sort of magazine. It is sold to libraries across the country, who use it as a reference and a buying guide. It is given away free to teenagers, of course!

Not only did Firebirds make it, so did Nina Kiriki Hoffman's A Stir of Bones, which Viking published in Fall 2003. A very nice surprise!

It was weird to wear an author (anthologist?) badge with stars on it.

A quick update to let you all know that I've just received the first inhouse copies of the Firebird edition of The Green Man, which we're publishing this summer. Looks absolutely gorgeous.

I will be Guest of Honor at Minicon next month. Be very afraid.

And I am now officially Editorial Director of Firebird. Nice way to start a week.

I was cycling through my usual newsgroups on USENET, and came across something interesting in rasf (rec.arts.sf.written) -- apparently both Firebirds and Alison Goodman's Singing the Dogstar Blues (Viking) are finalists for the Golden Duck Award. Who knew?

The American Library Association's Midwinter conference was this past weekend, and here's the good news:

First of all, Ursula K. Le Guin received the Margaret A. Edwards Award for a lifetime contribution to work for YA readers.

And guess what books were named ALA Best Books for Young Adults? Firebirds, Nina Kiriki Hoffman's A Stir of Bones, and Alison Goodman's Singing the Dogstar Blues! Terrific, huh? (These will all be Firebird paperbacks in due course.)

And yes, if you were wondering ... there will be another Firebird anthology, but not for a few years.

I hope that everyone had terrific holidays. I'm back in the office now, after two weeks off, and am excited by the prospect of new books and manuscripts to read. There are some very cool books in the works on both the Viking and Firebird side!

The Firebird website is going to be updated soon. What will change:

- This blog will be embedded
- The 2004 publishing schedule will go up
- The Spring 2004 books will be featured
- There is a new newsletter
- The FAQ will change

In re the last: as of now, I cannot look at any unsolicited queries or manuscripts, because I am drowning in work. This may change, but don't bet on it. Knowing how things are, I'm going to keep getting the unsoliciteds anyway. (If you are an aspiring author, I suggest this page. If you're an aspiring teenage author, go here too. NB: I don't publish teenagers.)

Hello, everyone.

Much to my delight, I am beginning to get email from people who have read Firebirds -- yes, I did put my address in the introduction for a reason.

The readers are from all over the world! Canada, the UK, Australia, and of course the USA. Each one I receive makes me so happy. More, please!

And this esteemed bookseller told me that Firebirds was their top hardback seller in November, which is appropriate.

The website is going to be updated in the new few weeks. It is really out of date and for that I am sorry.

I hope you don't have a blizzard, like we do here. sdn

I had plans for the next five days. I was going to San Francisco to attend NCTE (the annual convention of the National Council of Teachers of English) as well as the ALAN Workshop (ALAN is the Adolescent Literature Assembly of NCTE). And I was going to do a signing/reading thing with Charles de Lint at Borderlands Books on Saturday, November 22.

But there has been a death in my family, and so I am staying here. And I am disappointed for so many reasons.

I'll miss everyone.

Welcome to the Firebird weblog! I am planning on changing the format as I go; this is just to get things off the ground.

Last night, I got back from World Fantasy, which was great. Two pieces of news:

1. Lloyd Alexander won a Lifetime Achievement Award. I had known about this for weeks, but was sworn to silence. I was lucky enough to be the one to accept it for him.

2. The Green Man: Tales from the Mythic Forest, edited by Ellen Datlow and Terri Windling, with decorations by Charles Vess (Viking; Firebird, Spring 2004), won Best Anthology!
