This is because we lost our one (!) online person and a new one has not yet been hired.     <content type="html">Just got back from the &lt;a href="http://www.worldfantasy2004.org"&gt;World Fantasy Convention&lt;/a&gt; in lovely Tempe, AZ.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Although I didn't win in the Professional Category, and Charles de Lint didn't win in Short Fiction, it was very productive and lots of fun.  I hated to leave.</content>

    <content type="html">The &lt;a href="http://www.worldfantasy2004.org"&gt;2004 World Fantasy&lt;/a&gt; Award Finalists &lt;a href="http://www.locusmag.com/2004/News/08_WorldFantasyAwardBallot.html"&gt;have been announced&lt;/a&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.charlesdelint.com"&gt;Charles de Lint&lt;/a&gt; is a Finalist in the Short Fiction category, for his picture book &lt;a href="http://www.booksense.com/product/info.jsp?isbn=0670036471"&gt;&lt;i&gt;A Circle of Cats&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/a&gt; (illustrated by Charles Vess, who &lt;a href="http://www.budplant.com/level.itml/icOid/11524"&gt;won the Spectrum Gold&lt;/a&gt; for its cover)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And I myself am a Finalist in the Professional category, specifically for my work with Firebird.  I am flabbergasted.</content>

    <content type="html">I recently went to ALA (also known as the American Library Association)'s &lt;a href="http://www.ala.org/ala/eventsandconferencesb/annual/an2004/home.htm"&gt;Annual Conference&lt;/a&gt;, where I got to see many wonderful librarians.  I also spoke on a panel at the &lt;a href="http://www.ala.org/ala/booklist/booklist.htm"&gt;&lt;i&gt;Booklist&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/a&gt; Forum with Nancy Farmer, &lt;a href="http://www.tamora-pierce.com"&gt;Tamora Pierce&lt;/a&gt;, and &lt;a href="http://www.janeyolen.com"&gt;Jane Yolen&lt;/a&gt;.  It was fun, especially when the lights cut out during Nancy's speech.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;sdn</content>

    <content type="html">1.  Tomorrow afternoon Andy and I leave for &lt;a href="http://www.mnstf.org/minicon/minicon39/"&gt;Minicon&lt;/a&gt;, where I am Editor Guest of Honor.  I have never done this before.  Wish me luck.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;2.  While at Minicon, I will be feting &lt;span class='ljuser ljuser-name_pameladean' lj:user='pameladean' style='white-space: nowrap;'&gt;&lt;a href='http://pameladean.livejournal.com/profile'&gt;&lt;img src='http://l-stat.livejournal.com/img/userinfo.gif' alt='[info]' width='17' height='17' style='vertical-align: bottom; border: 0; padding-right: 1px;' /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;a href='http://pameladean.livejournal.com/'&gt;&lt;b&gt;pameladean&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/span&gt;, because her Secret Country books have been doing very well.     <content type="html">Today was the reception for the 75th annual list of the &lt;a href="http://www2.nypl.org/home/branch/teen/bta1.html"&gt;New York Public Library Books for the Teen Age&lt;/a&gt;.  This list is actually a lovely large glossy sort of magazine.  It is sold to libraries across the country, who use it as a reference and a buying guide.  It is given away free to teenagers, of course!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Not only did &lt;i&gt;Firebirds&lt;/i&gt; make it, so did Nina Kiriki Hoffman's &lt;a href="http://www.booksense.com/product/info.jsp?isbn=0670035513"&gt;&lt;i&gt;A Stir of Bones&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/a&gt;, which Viking published in Fall 2003.  A very nice surprise!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It was weird to wear an author (anthologist?) badge with stars on it.</content>

    <content type="html">A quick update to let you all know that I've just received the first inhouse copies of the Firebird edition of &lt;i&gt;The Green Man&lt;/i&gt;, which we're publishing this summer.  Looks absolutely gorgeous.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I will be Guest of Honor at &lt;a href="http://www.minicon.org"&gt;Minicon&lt;/a&gt; next month.  Be very afraid.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And I am now officially Editorial Director of Firebird.  Nice way to start a week.</content>

Le Guin&lt;/a&gt; received the &lt;a href="http://www.ala.org/Content/NavigationMenu/YALSA/Booklists_and_Book_Awards/Margaret_A__Edwards_Award/Margaret_A__Edwards_Award.htm"&gt;Margaret A. Edwards Award&lt;/a&gt; for a lifetime contribution to work for YA readers.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And guess what books were named &lt;a href="http://www.ala.org/Content/NavigationMenu/YALSA/Booklists_and_Book_Awards/Best_Books_for_Young_Adults/Best_Books_for_Young_Adults.htm"&gt;ALA Best Books for Young Adults&lt;/a&gt;?  &lt;i&gt;Firebirds&lt;/i&gt;, Nina Kiriki Hoffman's &lt;i&gt;A Stir of Bones&lt;/i&gt;, and &lt;a href="http://www.bssound.com.au/goodman/"&gt;Alison Goodman&lt;/a&gt;'s &lt;i&gt;Singing the Dogstar Blues&lt;/i&gt;!     <content type="html">I hope that everyone had terrific holidays.  I'm back in the office now, after two weeks off, and am excited by the prospect of new books and manuscripts to read.  There are some very cool books in the works on both the Viking and Firebird side!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The &lt;a href="http://www.firebirdbooks.com"&gt;Firebird website&lt;/a&gt; is going to be updated soon.  What will change:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;- This blog will be embedded&lt;br /&gt;- The 2004 publishing schedule will go up&lt;br /&gt;- The Spring 2004 books will be featured&lt;br /&gt;- There is a new newsletter&lt;br /&gt;- The FAQ will change&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In re the last: as of now, I cannot look at any unsolicited queries or manuscripts, because I am drowning in work.  This may change, but don't bet on it.  Knowing how things are, I'm going to keep getting the unsoliciteds anyway.  (If you are an aspiring author, I suggest &lt;a href="http://www.sharyn.org/slush.html"&gt;this page&lt;/a&gt;.     <content type="html">Hello, everyone.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Much to my delight, I am beginning to get email from people who have read &lt;i&gt;Firebirds&lt;/i&gt; -- yes, I did put my address in the introduction for a reason.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The readers are from all over the world!  Canada, the UK, Australia, and of course the USA.  Each one I receive makes me so happy.  More, please!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And &lt;a href="http://www.otherchangeofhobbit.com"&gt;this esteemed bookseller&lt;/a&gt; told me that &lt;i&gt;Firebirds&lt;/i&gt; was their top hardback seller in November, which is appropriate.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The &lt;a href="http://www.firebirdbooks.com"&gt;website&lt;/a&gt; is going to be updated in the new few weeks. I was going to San Francisco to attend &lt;a href="http://www.ncte.org"&gt;NCTE&lt;/a&gt; (the annual convention of the National Council of Teachers of English) as well as the &lt;a href="http://www.alan-ya.org"&gt;ALAN&lt;/a&gt; Workshop (ALAN is the Adolescent Literature Assembly of NCTE).  And I was going to do a signing/reading thing with &lt;a href="http://www.charlesdelint.com"&gt;Charles de Lint&lt;/a&gt; at &lt;a href="http://www.borderlands-books.com"&gt;Borderlands Books&lt;/a&gt; on Saturday, November 22.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But there has been a death in my family, and so I am staying here.  And I am disappointed for so many reasons.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I'll miss everyone.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;sdn</content>

I am planning on changing the format as I go; this is just to get things off the ground.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Last night, I got back from  &lt;a href="http://www.worldfantasy.org"&gt;World Fantasy&lt;/a&gt;, which was great.  Two pieces of news:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1.  Lloyd Alexander won a Lifetime Achievement Award.  I had known about this for weeks, but was sworn to silence.
